This is Tremalee, at the Port Royal marina. Beyond the boat and the dock pilings, across the water, is Parris Island, the Marine Corps training base.
The boat fills most of my photograph: weathered paint, ropes, nets and that bright red life ring. But the distant shoreline is part of the story, too.
Many Fridays are Marine graduation days. Families come to see their young Marines graduate, and the towns of Port Royal and Beaufort fill with visitors celebrating a moment they will remember for the rest of their lives.
I think that is something worth knowing when you look at this photograph. There is the working waterfront in front of you, and across the water, a place that means so much to so many families.
A photograph holds one moment. Knowing a little about the place lets you see more of it.
One more thing: there is a great restaurant right at the dock called FishCamp. Good seafood and a wonderful atmosphere. If you are visiting Port Royal, it is a lovely place to stop.
